I was almost convinced that seven o'clock in the morning was something of myth until today. Went out to the Rare Earth Farm for a tour of the facilities and a face to face about the personal philosophies of the farm. I was greeted with home made waffles and a stern handshake by one of the more interesting characters I've meet in a good while.
I started investigating local organic farming after reading an article about the 100 Mile Diet. I'm still not convinced this is a practical life choice for me.. But that just might be the pineapple lover in me talking.
On my quest I found Urban Ecology Center of Milwaukee. They talked about a little known program called Community Supported Agriculture. This is where I found Steve Young's Rare Earth Farm listing among several others.
Community Supported Agriculture or CSA is like having your own personal farmer. In a CSA, you purchase a "share" in a local farm and receive weekly deliveries of fresh produce throughout the growing season- typically late May to early November.
I was absolutely blown away by the program and Steves Farm. I will start the Work Share Program early this May. I'll admit.. I don't have the first clue about farming.. haha. This was discussed. But I did spend summer after summer in my grandmothers garden.. Dose that count?
If you are interested in the work share program and are willing to make a season long commitment I am organizing a car pool for every Saturday from Noon to Six (that is including transit time). There are stillThree Two seats available.

This is something that I really want to suport 100% though and I think if I had a family, it would be a great thing to do together when the children are old enough to endure a work day on a farm.
I think this is something that will really change the way you look at the earth and at agriculture and consumerism. It's really going to teach you something valuable. It's a whole different world when you are actually helping with something using you bare hands as opposed to supporting from afar, it makes you actually feel that you have contributed.
Farming is extremely hard work at times, and I do mean extreme. My aunt was raised on a farm with cows and chickens and the whole nine yards. She used to tell me stories about it when I was little. If you are'nt raised with it, it will be something to get used to and you will definetly get your excersize for the week :).
And on that note, I wish you much luck on the little farm my Jeffies, remember to be safe.
